ABOUT ME

I combine the visual skills of a designer with the literary skills of a writer, along with the industry knowledge of a tech salesperson.

Gerardo San Diego

PROFESSIONAL

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design from California State University Long Beach, and have spent the last 25 years designing content for hospitals, educators, nonprofits, and industrial manufacturers. My clients include USC Department of Surgery, Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE), and California State University (CSU).

I combine the visual skills of a designer with the literary skills of a writer, along with the industry knowledge of a tech salesperson. I can write and research your content, design your logo and corporate brand, create your social media assets and produce your podcast.

PERSONAL

I’ve been drawing since I was 4 years old, playing piano since 6, an only child, and immigrated to America from the Philippines with my parents when I was 7 years old.

I speak English and Tagalog fluently and just enough French to impress people who don’t speak it at all.

My favorite year in the distant past is 1977 because that’s when I discovered Billy Joel and Star Wars.

Q & A

What books on your shelf are begging to be read?
Freakonomics, Catcher in the Rye, still need to finish 1984, The Dancing Wu Li Masters, and currently reading The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying.

How often do you doodle? What do your doodles look like?
I doodle almost every day. Here’s one:

What is one guilty pleasure you enjoy too much to give up?
Taro milk tea with boba. Preferably from Boba Loca.

Are you more likely to avoid conflict or engage it head-on?
I avoid is as much as possible unless I have to deal with it, and then I just do it.

Do you have a whole lot of acquaintances or just a few very close friends? Why?
Few very close friends, simply because I don’t have time to devote to more people. And I hate driving long distances. Have them all come over to my house and I’m fine with that.

What do you think about more than anything else?
Deconstructing social norms. It’s fun.

Do you prefer that people shoot straight with you or temper their words? Why?
Shoot straight. More efficient and life’s too short.

Where’s your favourite place to take an out-of-town guest?
The Huntington Library if it’s a nice day.

Do you have a catchphrase?
“Work out your mind, play out your heart.”

How and where do you prefer to study?
At a properly lit desk with no sound in the room and lot of clear desk space.

What’s your all-time favourite town or city? Why?
Besides suburban Los Angeles, I love Chicago because of the culture and everything’s close by without feeling claustrophobic.

What are the top three qualities that draw you to someone new?
Intelligence, artistic sensibility, humanity.

If you could eliminate one weakness or limitation in your life, what would it be?
Time.

Do you believe ignorance is bliss? Why or why not?
Yes. Because I’m not there and the grass is always greener.

When do you find yourself singing?
When it feels right, anywhere, any time.
